Your First AI Voice Call: A Friendly Setup Guide

Everything to do before you press call on RingNZ: microphone, room, headphones, character choice and the first thing to say.

Talking out loud to an AI character is a different experience from typing, and a few minutes of setup make the first call smoother. This guide covers the simple steps that help your voice come through clearly and your conversation feel natural from the first sentence.

Choose a comfortable spot

Pick a room where you can speak at a normal volume. A quiet space helps the character hear you clearly, and it lets you relax into the conversation. A bedroom, a parked car or a calm corner of the house all work nicely.

Headphones or earbuds are a great idea. They keep the character's voice out of your microphone, so the conversation flows without echo and the character hears only you.

Allow the microphone

The first time you press call, your browser asks for permission to use the microphone. Choose allow, and make sure the right input is selected if you have more than one, such as a headset or a laptop microphone. If you ever want to change it later, the lock icon beside the address bar opens the site settings.

A quick test is to say a sentence and watch for the character to respond. If you have a headset with a mute button, check that it is switched on.

Pick a character that fits your goal

Browse the character list and choose a voice and personality that match what you want from the call. A friendly helper suits brainstorming and questions. A narrator suits an interactive story. An anime style character suits playful roleplay.

Reading the short description before you call tells you the tone to expect, so your opening line can match it.

Start with a short opening line

Voice conversations work best in short turns. Try something like: "Hi, I have ten minutes. Can you help me plan my week?" Clear context at the start gives the character something to build on.

Speak in sentences of a natural length, pause when you finish, and let the reply arrive. If you want to move the conversation along, you can jump in with your next thought.

Keep the call useful

Ask follow up questions, request a summary at the end, and jot down any ideas you want to keep. Many people like to finish with: "Can you give me three next steps?" That turns a chat into a plan.

Calls are a wonderful complement to time with friends and family, and a handy way to practise, brainstorm and unwind.

Ideas for a first topic

If you are unsure what to say, start with something you already enjoy. Ask for a fun fact about a place you want to visit, a recipe idea for tonight, or help naming a project. Easy topics let you get used to the rhythm of speaking and listening.

Once you feel at home, try a longer exchange: plan a trip together, rehearse a presentation, or explore a story where the character plays a part. Each call teaches you a little about how you like to talk, and your next one will feel even more natural.

Make it your own

Every character has its own voice and style, so trying a few is part of the fun. Return to a favourite when you want a familiar tone, and explore a new one when you want a fresh perspective. Share a character you love with a friend so you can compare how each call turned out.

Takeaway: A quiet spot, headphones, microphone permission and a short opening line set up a great first AI voice call.
